Mark 1:27
The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, “What is this? A new teaching—and with authority! He even gives orders to impure spirits and they obey him.”
During Lent, we are reminded of the ultimate sacrifice that Christ made for us. Today’s Bible passage is about a man with an unclean spirit. This story shows how Jesus has authority over everyone and everything in this world.
When I look at this story of how Jesus cast out a demon from a man, a song lyric from Phil Wickham’s song, “What an Awesome God” comes to mind. The lyric says: “…before his throne every knee falls, the demons have to run, the angels have to praise, even the wind and waves obey…”
Our world often pushes the agenda that things and desires are what makes us who we are. God calls us to different goals in this life. These goals will sometimes make us look like outcasts to the people of this world but will help us remain focused on God’s plan for us which is much more fulfilling.
In today’s Bible passage, Jesus demonstrates to everyone around that nothing has authority over His power.
During this season of Lent, let us not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of our minds and souls. I hope we are reminded of the ultimate love God gave us by sacrificing His only Son so we could be free from sin. Lent is a good time to be honest with yourself and take account of the things you have done and sins you have committed. Bring them to the foot of the cross because Jesus is waiting there with open arms.
Pray with me…
Dear God, I pray that as we look forward to celebrating Easter, You remind us of Your infinite power in this world. God, help us bring our sins and confess them to You at the foot of the cross where You wait for us. Jesus, I pray for healing over everyone reading or hearing this—that You help them in all that they do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
