Mark 6:41
Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all.
Jesus’ miracle of feeding the five thousand turned out amazing. I say “turned out” because the disciples had no idea how to feed such a large crowd, but Jesus did. It was amazing for both the disciples and also for the many thousands of people who were fed.
The disciples were looking for a place to rest. Yet, when they arrived at the far shore of the Sea of Galilee, a great crowd of at least five thousand people who traveled on foot to see and hear Jesus met them. Jesus wanted to feed them.
Mark 6:38 records a conversation between Jesus and His disciples. Jesus asked, “How many loaves do you have?” Then, He said, “Go and see.” When they found out, they said, “Five – and two fish.” Then Jesus performed the miracle described in today’s Bible passage.
After everyone had eaten, the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish.
This was the first miracle in which Jesus asked His disciples to participate. One can imagine their amazement as well over five thousand people ate until they were satisfied. Surely their faith grew that day, along with their desire to learn more about Him.
Let us use this miracle as an example of what our Lord Jesus Christ can do and as a springboard to strengthen our faith. During this Lenten season, let’s remember His miracles and cherish the ultimate sacrifice we celebrate.
Pray with me…
Lord Jesus, help us look to You and Your sacrifice on the cross. Open our hearts to a richer understanding of Your Word each day. As brothers and sisters in Christ, may we grow together – sharing, learning, serving, singing, and encouraging one another through fellowship and connection. Strengthen our faith as we reflect on all You have done for us and what it means to follow You. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
