John 11:4
When he heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.”
Being patient with God’s timing is rather difficult in today’s age filled with short form content in places like social media and news headlines. Sometimes we find ourselves in situations where it feels as if there is nothing we can do in order to make the situation better.
We are called to put our faith into God’s timing in these moments just as Jesus did whenever his dear friend Lazarus became sick and died.
Mary and Martha wanted Jesus to know about Lazarus’ sickness so they sent Him a messenger. They probably thought Jesus would heal their brother before he died. Jesus responded by saying the words listed in today’s Bible passage.
After Lazarus died, Jesus waited and didn’t show up until four days after Lazarus had been placed in the tomb. To Mary and Martha, those four days must have felt like Jesus had abandoned them even though He was never absent from their suffering.
When Jesus arrived at the tomb, He grieved with the sisters and then called Lazarus out from the grave. This miracle shows us that God is never away and absent in our time of trouble and that trusting in His timing allows Him to work in ways that are far greater than what we could ever do on our own.
Pray with me…
Dear Lord, Your plan for us is something that we can never truly understand. I pray that when we face spiritual or physical troubles in our lives, we will trust what You have in store for us with the certainty that You will always be with us. Thank You for everything You have given us. In Your name I pray, Amen.
