John 4:48-50
“Unless you people see signs and wonders,” Jesus told him, “you will never believe.” The royal official said, “Sir, come down before my child dies.” “Go,” Jesus replied, “your son will live.” The man took Jesus at his word and departed.
Would your faith be stronger if you witnessed one of Jesus’ miracles firsthand? What if you witnessed several miracles? What if the Bible contained no miracles Jesus performed—aside from the resurrection? Would our faith still stand? Is our belief rooted in the fact that Jesus turned water into wine or restored sight to the blind? Imagine Jesus standing before us and saying, “Unless you see signs and wonders, you will never believe.”
I often wonder about the tone of His voice when He said this. Reading these red letters repeatedly raises an important question: how many miracles are enough? Was it enough for Peter to walk on water? Was it enough for Thomas only after he touched Jesus’ wounds?
Recently, while watching The Chosen, I was struck during a scene where the followers recite the mighty works of the Lord during Passover.
After each testimony, they conclude by saying, “Even if that had been the only gift from God, it would have been enough.” For the man whose son was sick and dying, Jesus’ simple words—“Go, your son will live”—were enough.
At some point in life, each of us will face a moment when we pray desperately for a miracle. Regardless of whether God answers that prayer in the way we hope, we can rest in this truth: what God has already done through His Son, Jesus Christ, is enough. Praise be to God.
Pray with me…
Father, please strengthen our faith so that when we come to You praying for a miracle, we already know You have done enough. We believe, not because of signs and wonders, but because You sent Your Son to pay the price for our sins. That is enough. And believing in Him is enough to receive Your grace and peace for eternity. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
