BAPTISM
Baptism
Baptism is a super important part of our Christian faith! At Salem, we believe it is so important, we recognize it as a SACRAMENT. Lutherans celebrate two sacraments (Baptism and Holy Communion) and understand they are sacred to God and us.
Sacraments share four key markers:
- 1) instituted by God
- 2) connected to God’s Word
- 3) contains physical element(s)
- 4) offers forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation
Here are three helpful Bible passages and three frequently asked questions about BAPTISM.
Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:18-20)
Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.” (Acts 2:38-39)
But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior. (Titus 3:4-6)
